CHAPTER 8

The Fieldings’ home was a neat, detached house on the outskirts of town, within walking distance of one of the best parks in the area. Sara pulled up in the nearest gap, and Carla slotted in behind her. There was a light on in the front upstairs window.

Carla joined Sara at the front gate. The security light came on the second they put a toe on the concrete path. Sara rang the bell and sucked in a few steadying breaths to combat the thought of destroying yet another family’s life.

“Yes, who’s there?” a stern man’s voice sounded on the other side.

Sara leaned close to the door and said, “I’m Detective Inspector Sara Ramsey. Sorry to trouble you so late, Mr Fielding. Is it possible to have a word with you?”

The chain clattered, and the door was wrenched open. “What’s the meaning of this intrusion at such a late hour?” he demanded. His gaze took in Sara and Carla from head to toe.

“It would be better if we came in and spoke with you, Mr Fielding.”

He huffed out an impatient breath, wrapped his tartan dressing gown around his waist and gestured for them to enter the hallway. “Just me, or do you want my wife to come down as well?”

“Both of you, if you don’t mind?” Sara issued a slight smile.

“Anita, can you come down, darling? Don’t be alarmed, but it’s the police.”

“What?” A thud sounded overhead. “I’m coming. Oh, my God, has something happened to Laura? Is that why they’re here?” Anita shouted as she made her way to the top of the stairs. She stared down at the three of them and shook her head. “I know something is wrong. The police aren’t normally in the habit of showing up unannounced at this time of night.”

“I don’t know what’s going on yet. Be careful, lift your dressing gown up in case you trip,” her husband advised.

“Stop treating me like a child.” Once she’d reached the hallway, Mrs Fielding let out a sigh and said, “Tell us.”

“Can we go in the lounge?” Sara asked.

The couple looked at each other, nodded, and then Mrs Fielding reached for her husband’s hand. They led the way into a square lounge, not too big. It was decorated in magnolia, and on every wall were clusters of photos. Sara immediately picked out Laura in some of them. She swallowed down the acid burning her throat and sat on the sofa as Mr Fielding had instructed.

“Please, don’t keep us waiting any longer, why are you here?” Anita asked.

“Earlier this evening we received a call out to attend an incident at your daughter, Laura’s, house.”

Anita gasped and grabbed her husband’s hand once more.

“Is she in hospital?” Anita asked.

“I’m sorry, no. Your daughter didn’t make it.”

The couple stared at Sara for a few moments, and then Anita sobbed. Her husband left his seat and crouched in front of her while Anita continued to cry.

“There, there, love.” He peered over his shoulder and asked, “How… how did she die?”

Sara’s gaze flicked between the husband and wife.
